Job Description and Duties

Under the general supervision of the Correctional Counselor II (Supervisor), the Correctional Counselor I (CCI) interviews incarcerated persons (IP)  to gather information, reads, evaluates, reviews, and summarizes reports from a variety of sources to assist in classification of the IPs. The CCI is responsible for the protection of the community, staff and IPs through the classification process, IP counseling and through the enforcement of the facility policies, Rules and Regulations of the Director of Corrections, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitations (CDCR) policies and procedures as stipulated in the Department Operations Manual and any other applicable rules, law and regulations.

These positions are currently being filled limited-term 12 months; may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position.

Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If it is determined a candidate does not meet the Minimum Qualifications, the candidate will be withheld from the eligibility list, rendering them inactive and ineligible to be hired for the position. Candidates who have been withheld may file an appeal with the State Personnel Board.

Candidates new to CDCR are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by departmental annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.
